Pardon Me, You're Biting My Earlobe
They are known as laughing gulls. I'm sure they were laughing at me swatting flies...

a photoblog of tales from my adventures in northern Canada over the next few years, if I don't freeze first...

Just got back from "swimming" at the beach! Nothing like a frigid dip in icy waters to cool a person down. Actually, the first 100 feet were pretty warm, then the temperature changed quite rapidly to COLD. There isn't much drop for many yards, but I was out to my upper chest which was just enough. The bottom is rippled fine sand, and oh so very nice. The water was murky likely due to the sandy bottom, but that was fine...I feel SO REFRESHED! And that's what mattered to me most. I wasn't actually swimming since it was so shallow, and I forgot to take off my bandanna and sunglasses...and it was a loooonnnnggg way back to the shore...so I just wandered about, cooling off. Of course, I wasn't alone...since I have gotten to know many of the kids in town through my job, I was swarmed...everyone wanted to make sure there were no dry patches on me, heh heh. So I was splashed a fair bit. The only rule I had was I don't like being splashed in the face...
And the best part - hardly any bulldogs...

Summer in the north is an interesting experience...I'm enjoying the heat for the most part...it's been above 20C every day for weeks and sunny. Who could ask for more...
Me. Along with the sun and warmer weather we have the pleasure of being assaulted by what is known locally as "bulldog flies" which some may know as deer flies, dung flies, horse flies, etc. Except these are twice as big and bite twice as hard, the little bastards. And they are everywhere...particularly near doorways for some odd reason...today I stopped at the Northern Store to put a poster on the bulletin board in the porch and was bit 3 times by those little effers...and then I just read that they can transmit anthrax between cattle and sheep...I wonder if that's how the buffalo contracted anthrax here last year...hmmm....
And then there are the forest fires. Nothing that is going to burn me out anytime soon, and the one causing problems this week is a controlled burn, but the smoke is downright nasty at times. The fire is reportedly about 50 miles from town and it was supposed to be just some grass the Dept of Forestry and Lands was burning, but now it's into some trees and I think they need to go put it OUT. Now. I woke up this morning to the stench, and it carried throughout the morning, and I could actually see it in the air today. Last week's fire smoke was not as visible, though just as caustic, and was reportedly from a fire 200 miles away.
Apparently we're in for some heavy rain. I'll believe it when I see it. It has only rained about twice since I moved here, other than an occasional spatter of 5 drops once.
Despite the flies and smoke, I am heading down to the beach to cool off!

Took a trip to the local Northern Store here today and picked up 2 movies, a package of weiners, a bag of rice chips, a 4 pack of pudding cups, and a package of feminine hygeine products - total $30.45. The weiners were $5.29 for Schneider's, and the fhp were $7.35...I just swallow and keep on going...that's why we get paid the big bucks, but it doesn't make it any easier to part with.
